Mates in Mind – improving mental health in the construction industry

Every year more construction workers are killed by suicide than falls. Isn’t that shocking? Mates in Mind is a registered charity dedicated to raising awareness and addressing the stigma of poor mental health in the UK construction industry.

“No health without mental health”

Mates in Mind was established by the Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG), in response to calls from leaders in construction to improve the mental wellbeing of the construction workforce. Their mission is to get people in construction talking about mental health issues as well as directing those affected to where they can find help. The charity works in partnership with leading mental health charities such as the Samaritans and Mind. It is supported by some of the biggest names in UK construction, including Balfour Beatty, Network Rail and Colas UK. Mates in Mind aims to:
  • Raise awareness and understanding of mental health in the construction industry
  • Guide workers and employers to the right support
  • Promote a culture of positive wellbeing in the industry
